Topic 8: resolution & colour space

Resolution

There are 2 basic resolutions you should know:

  • 72 dpi (pixels per inch) web / monitor / TV
  • 300 dpi (dots per inch) print (magazines, books etc)

Your images should be 300 dpi for your one-page document

In Photoshop:

  • Image > Image Size
  • turn OFF resample image
  • set Resolution to 300 dpi (see example)
  • save
  • Do again changing size as needed with resample image on

 

Colour Space

There are 2 basic colour spaces with which you should be familiar:

  • RGB (red, green, blue) for web / monitor / TV
  • CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) print

Your images should be CMYK for your one-page document

 

Fancy Smancy backgrounds

  • download brushes.zip (10mb)
  • extract all to the following location:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Presets\Brushes
  • be sure to restart Photoshop if it is already open
  • to select a new brush, right-click the page with the brush tool, then click on the arrow in the top right-hand corner
  • Pro Tip: use layers to be able to adjust opacity of different brushes later

    • click "mask" button in layers panel
    • fine tune with brushes where black hides, white reveals and shades of gray create transparency
